Dunes, saltmarshes, and two long-distance trails
Holme-next-the-Sea lies on the north Norfolk coast between Old Hunstanton and Thornham, within the Norfolk Coast National Landscape. The village sits slightly inland from a broad coastal landscape of dunes, saltmarshes, beach and nature reserves overlooking The Wash.
The village is an important point on Norfolk's long-distance walking network. The Peddars Way reaches the coast near Holme-next-the-Sea after travelling north from Knettishall Heath, while the Norfolk Coast Path passes through the area on its journey from Hunstanton to Hopton-on-Sea.
Immediately north of the village, Holme Dunes Nature Reserve protects an extensive area of dunes, grazing marsh, freshwater pools and coastal habitats. The surrounding paths provide opportunities to explore the landscape independently or as part of a longer walk along the coast.
To the west, the Norfolk Coast Path leads towards Old Hunstanton Lighthouse, Hunstanton Cliffs and the trail's starting point in Hunstanton. To the east, the route continues towards Thornham, Titchwell and Brancaster, passing through some of the open coastal landscapes that characterise this western section of the Norfolk Coast.
Exploring Holme-next-the-Sea on foot
Holme-next-the-Sea is particularly well placed for exploring the western end of the Norfolk Coast National Landscape. Walkers can follow sections of the Norfolk Coast Path in either direction, explore the trails around Holme Dunes Nature Reserve, or reach the coast at the northern end of the Peddars Way.
Its position at the meeting point of two long-distance trails also makes the village a natural stopping point for walkers completing the Peddars Way or continuing east along the Norfolk Coast Path.
For walkers exploring Holme-next-the-Sea and the western end of the Norfolk Coast, Le Strange Arms Hotel provides a nearby beachside base in Old Hunstanton. From the hotel, the Norfolk Coast Path leads east towards Holme-next-the-Sea, Holme Dunes Nature Reserve and the point where the Peddars Way reaches the coast.
