A coastal landmark above The Wash
Old Hunstanton Lighthouse stands above the cliffs at Old Hunstanton, overlooking the shoreline and the open waters of The Wash. Built in 1840, the lighthouse is one of the most distinctive landmarks on this part of the Norfolk Coast, occupying a prominent position above the beach and cliffs.
The lighthouse stands close to Hunstanton Cliffs, where bands of carrstone, red chalk and white chalk create one of Norfolk's most recognisable stretches of coastline. From the surrounding clifftop, the landscape opens west across The Wash, while the beach and shoreline extend north towards Old Hunstanton.
The Norfolk Coast Path passes beside the lighthouse as it leaves Hunstanton and continues through Old Hunstanton towards Holme-next-the-Sea. This makes the lighthouse an easy landmark to encounter at the beginning of a longer journey along the trail or during a shorter walk between Hunstanton and Old Hunstanton.
Beyond Old Hunstanton, the coast becomes increasingly open, with beaches and dunes leading towards Holme Dunes Nature Reserve and the wider Norfolk Coast National Landscape. Together, the lighthouse, cliffs and surrounding coastline form a distinctive introduction to the landscapes encountered along the Norfolk Coast Path.
