Heathland, Wetlands and Coastal Towns
The Suffolk Coast stretches along the North Sea through a changing landscape of beaches, shingle, heathland, wetlands, estuaries and coastal towns. Much of the coastline lies within the Suffolk & Essex Coast & Heaths National Landscape, which protects a distinctive mixture of coastal and inland landscapes.
The Suffolk Coast Path provides one of the best ways to explore the area on foot. Running between Felixstowe and Lowestoft, the trail passes through places including Bawdsey, Orford, Aldeburgh, Dunwich and Southwold, connecting coastal settlements with quieter stretches of countryside and shoreline.
Wildlife is a defining part of the landscape. Wetlands, reedbeds, heathland and coastal habitats support a wide variety of species, with places including RSPB Minsmere and the landscapes around Dunwich providing some of the best-known areas for nature along the coast.
Historic towns, villages and estuaries add another layer to the coastline. Orford sits beside the River Ore, Aldeburgh faces directly onto the North Sea, and Southwold combines a traditional seaside town with access to the surrounding coast and countryside. Together they provide useful bases for exploring different sections of the Suffolk Coast.
