The Suffolk Coast Path passes through Dunwich as it follows the coastline between Aldeburgh and Southwold. From the village, walkers can follow the route south towards Minsmere and Sizewell or north through Dingle Marshes towards Walberswick, making The Ship useful both as an overnight stop on the trail and as a base for shorter coastal walks.

Nearby Minsmere Nature Reserve brings together reedbeds, wetlands, heathland, woodland and shingle coast, while Dingle Marshes Nature Reserve extends north between Dunwich and Walberswick. Together, these protected landscapes provide opportunities to explore wildlife, wetlands and the changing coastline without travelling far from Dunwich.
