Walking and cycling in Thetford Forest
Thetford Forest extends across Norfolk and Suffolk, covering a large part of the Brecks with woodland, heathland, open clearings and an extensive network of forest tracks. The scale of the forest makes it one of the most significant places for woodland walking and cycling in the East of England.
High Lodge provides a central point for exploring the forest, with walking and cycling routes leading into the surrounding woodland. From shorter forest walks to longer rides through the wider trail network, the landscape can be explored independently using routes of different lengths and character.
Beyond High Lodge, forest roads, tracks and paths extend across a much larger landscape between Thetford, Brandon and the surrounding Brecks. Pine woodland gives way to areas of heathland and open ground, while quieter sections of the forest provide opportunities for longer walks and cycle rides away from the main visitor areas.
The wider forest also connects with places including Thetford and Knettishall Heath, while the Peddars Way begins on the eastern side of the Brecks and passes through part of the wider Thetford Forest landscape at Harling Woods. This makes the long-distance trail part of the forest's wider walking geography rather than the focus of exploring Thetford Forest itself.
