Historic parkland and the Holkham Estate
Holkham Hall stands at the heart of the Holkham Estate near Holkham on the north Norfolk coast. Surrounded by parkland, woodland and agricultural land, the 18th-century country house forms the historic centre of an estate extending through some of the most distinctive landscapes of the Norfolk Coast.
The hall sits within extensive parkland, where open grassland, mature trees and estate buildings create a landscape very different from the beaches, dunes and saltmarshes nearby. Together, the house and surrounding park provide an opportunity to explore the historic and managed landscapes that lie behind the north Norfolk coastline.
Beyond the estate, Holkham Beach and the coastal landscape around Holkham form part of the Norfolk Coast National Landscape. The contrast between historic parkland inland and the open coastal environment makes Holkham particularly distinctive, with woodland, grazing land, dunes, beach and marshes encountered within a relatively compact area.
The Norfolk Coast Path passes through the wider Holkham landscape as it follows the coast between Burnham Overy Staithe and Wells-next-the-Sea. Holkham Hall lies inland from the trail, but its parkland and estate provide another way to explore the area during a stay in Holkham or while spending longer on this section of the Norfolk coast.
