Parkland walks, sandy beaches and the Norfolk Coast Path

Holkham is a small village on the Norfolk Coast, situated between Burnham Overy Staithe and Wells-next-the-Sea, within the Norfolk Coast National Landscape. Known for its historic estate, extensive parkland and nearby sandy beach, Holkham provides access to some of the most distinctive walking landscapes along the Norfolk Coast Path.

The village is closely associated with Holkham Hall, an 18th-century country house set within a large landscaped deer park. Paths and estate routes offer opportunities to explore woodland, open grassland, lakes and historic parkland, providing a different walking experience from the coastal marshes and beaches nearby. Access to individual areas of the estate may depend on opening arrangements.

North of the village, Holkham Beach stretches along a broad expanse of sand backed by dunes and pine woodland. The surrounding coastal habitats form part of Holkham National Nature Reserve, where walkers can explore woodland paths, dune landscapes and the open shoreline, with views across the North Sea.

The Norfolk Coast Path connects Holkham with neighbouring coastal destinations. Heading west, walkers can continue towards Burnham Overy Staithe, passing grazing marshes, dunes and open coastal landscapes. To the east, the route leads towards Wells-next-the-Sea, with paths through the pinewoods and along the edge of the coastal landscape.

Holkham's position within the Norfolk Coast National Landscape makes it a useful base for combining coastal walking with visits to historic parkland and neighbouring villages. The variety of landscapes, from sandy beaches and saltmarshes to woodland and estate grounds, provides opportunities for shorter walks, longer coastal routes and walking breaks based in the surrounding area.

For visitors exploring Holkham, The Globe Inn in nearby Wells-next-the-Sea offers accommodation within easy reach of Holkham Beach, Holkham Hall and the Norfolk Coast Path. Its location provides a convenient base for walking through the coastal landscape, visiting the historic estate and exploring the wider Norfolk Coast National Landscape over a few days.
