Burnham Overy Staithe, Norfolk – Harbour Village on the Norfolk Coast Path
Harbour Channels, Dunes, and the Norfolk Coast National Landscape
Burnham Overy Staithe is a small harbour village on the north Norfolk coast along the Norfolk Coast Path, set within the Norfolk Coast National Landscape between Burnham Deepdale and Holkham. Walking into the village, the route follows raised sea walls and grassy banks above wide saltmarsh and tidal channels, with open views across the harbour and out toward the dunes and sea.
The settlement sits beside Overy Creek, where boats lie moored along the channel and paths lead toward the beach across open grazing marsh. From the harbour, a long, level track continues north through dunes to the shoreline, creating a gradual transition from sheltered marshland to exposed coast. Walking here is mostly flat and steady, shaped by distance and horizon rather than ascent.
Burnham Overy Staithe provides useful services for walkers. There is a pub and seasonal facilities near the harbour, with additional cafés, shops, camping, and accommodation available in nearby Burnham Deepdale and the surrounding villages, making this a practical stopping point along the Norfolk Coast Path.
Beyond the village, the route continues east toward Holkham across dunes and nature reserves, or west toward Burnham Deepdale along sea walls and open marsh. The landscape remains broad and undeveloped, with big skies and protected coastal habitats throughout the wider National Landscape.
