Shingle shoreline, coastal marshes and open sea
Cley Beach lies north of Cley-next-the-Sea on the Norfolk Coast, where a broad bank of shingle separates the North Sea from the marshes and wetlands inland. The exposed shoreline forms part of the Norfolk Coast National Landscape, with wide coastal views and a landscape shaped by tides, storms and shifting shingle.
Unlike the sandy beaches farther west at Holkham Beach and Wells Beach, Cley Beach is predominantly shingle, giving it a quieter, more rugged character. The beach stretches along an open section of coastline, with views towards Blakeney Point to the west and Salthouse to the east.
Immediately inland, Cley Marshes Nature Reserve provides an important habitat for wading birds, wildfowl and other coastal wildlife. Managed by Norfolk Wildlife Trust, the reserve includes reedbeds, grazing marshes, pools and lagoons, with opportunities for birdwatching and exploring the surrounding landscape.
The Norfolk Coast Path runs through the wider Cley landscape, connecting Blakeney and Cley-next-the-Sea with Salthouse and the coastline farther east. Visitors can combine time on the beach with walks along the coastal paths, taking in views across the marshes, shingle banks and open sea.
Access to the beach is available from Cley-next-the-Sea via Beach Road, which leads north towards the shingle shoreline. The village itself is known for its historic buildings, narrow streets and Cley Windmill, providing a contrasting setting to the exposed coast.
Cley Beach is particularly appealing for visitors interested in coastal walking, wildlife and quieter landscapes. The shoreline is exposed to the weather, and visitors should take care around the sea, especially during strong winds, high tides and rough conditions.
For visitors exploring Cley Beach and the surrounding Norfolk Coast National Landscape, Cley Windmill offers accommodation in the historic village of Cley-next-the-Sea, overlooking the coastal marshes. From here, visitors can explore Cley Marshes Nature Reserve, the village and the Norfolk Coast Path, with Cley Beach and its shingle shoreline nearby.
