Coniston, Cumbria – Village on the Cumbria Way

Lakeside Paths, Valley Tracks, and the Lake District National Park

Coniston is a village in the south-western Lake District on the Cumbria Way, set at the northern end of Coniston Water within the Lake District National Park. The route passes directly through the village, linking valley paths and minor roads with village streets before continuing into quieter countryside.

Approaching Coniston, the Cumbria Way descends through farmland and woodland into the Coppermines valley and the edge of the village. Walking here shifts from open hillsides and enclosed lanes to a more settled landscape, with stone buildings, bridges, and green spaces marking the transition into the village centre.

From Coniston, the trail connects easily to lakeside paths beside Coniston Water and to valley routes heading away from the village. The walking is generally steady and level through the valley floor, with steep fell slopes rising sharply above, including the flanks of the Old Man of Coniston.

Coniston provides useful services for walkers. There are cafés, pubs, shops, and accommodation within the village, making it a practical place to stop, resupply, or stay overnight between the more remote sections of the Cumbria Way. Public transport links connect Coniston with nearby towns and villages across the southern Lake District.

Beyond Coniston, the Cumbria Way continues through woodland and open countryside toward the next valleys, leaving the lakeside setting behind as the route returns to quieter rural walking.
