Alnmouth, Northumberland – Coastal Village on the Northumberland Coast Path
Estuary sands, dunes, and open North Sea shoreline
Alnmouth sits on the Northumberland coast at the mouth of the River Aln, directly on the Northumberland Coast Path within the Northumberland Coast National Landscape. The route passes through the centre of the village before following the beach, dunes, and low cliffs, linking Alnmouth with Warkworth to the south and Boulmer and Craster to the north.
The settlement stands slightly above a broad sweep of sand backed by grassy dunes and saltmarsh around the estuary. Walking here is generally level underfoot, with firm sand at low tide, grassy paths through dunes, and short sections of roadside or clifftop path. The terrain is open and exposed, with wide views along the shoreline and inland across farmland.
Alnmouth functions as a practical stop on this stretch of coast. There are cafés, pubs, small shops, and places to stay in the village, and the nearby railway station provides regular services on the East Coast Main Line, making it one of the easiest access points along the route.
From the village, the Northumberland Coast Path heads south across the beach toward Warkworth and Amble, or north past Boulmer toward Craster and Dunstanburgh Castle, staying close to the shoreline for much of the way.
