Lagrán, Álava – Foothills Village on the GR® 38 Route

Woodland slopes and the transition into the Cantabrian foothills

Lagrán sits in the foothills of the Cantabrian Mountains along the GR® 38 Wine & Fish Route, marking the transition from the open vineyard landscapes of Rioja Alavesa to more wooded and upland terrain. Approaching the village, the route leaves expansive agricultural plains behind and enters a quieter landscape of forest edges, pasture, and rising ridgelines.

The settlement lies in a shallow valley surrounded by mixed woodland and grazing land, with hills rising steadily toward the Sierra de Toloño to the south and higher uplands to the north. This landscape feels more enclosed than the vineyard country below, with tree cover increasing and the terrain becoming more varied underfoot.

Walking into Lagrán, the GR® 38 follows rural tracks and minor roads through fields and woodland margins. Gentle climbs begin to replace the level walking of earlier stages, and the air feels cooler and greener as elevation increases.

Lagrán is a small and peaceful village with limited services, offering a quiet stopping point within a landscape defined by agriculture, woodland, and upland transition. Nearby towns provide broader accommodation and supply options.

Beyond Lagrán, the route continues toward Okina and the interior plains of Álava, where the landscape gradually opens again after the foothill crossing.
