Okina, Álava – Valley Village on the GR® 38 Route
Wooded ravines, limestone landscapes, and quiet interior terrain
Okina is a small rural village in Álava along the GR® 38 Wine & Fish Route, set within a narrow valley shaped by woodland, limestone formations, and seasonal streams. Reaching Okina, the route enters one of the most distinctive landscapes of the interior stage, where enclosed terrain and rocky outcrops contrast with the open plains and foothills crossed earlier in the journey.
The village lies within a sheltered basin surrounded by wooded slopes and rugged limestone ridges. Nearby, the dramatic formations of the Okina Gorge and surrounding uplands create a landscape defined by erosion, rock, and water, while pasture and small fields occupy the valley floor.
Approaching Okina, the GR® 38 follows rural tracks and quiet roads through woodland and open grazing land, with gentle undulations replacing the steadier gradients of the foothill crossing. The enclosed setting and cooler, shaded terrain give this section a quieter and more intimate character.
Okina is small and lightly serviced, offering a peaceful rural stopping point rather than a fully equipped stage base. Nearby Vitoria-Gasteiz provides accommodation, transport links, and a full range of services.
Beyond Okina, the route continues north across the Llanada Alavesa plains toward Estíbaliz and Vitoria-Gasteiz, where the landscape opens and historic landmarks mark the transition toward the Basque interior.
