North West Highlands UNESCO Global Geopark

Mountain landscapes, ancient geology, and coastal scenery in the Scottish Highlands

The North West Highlands UNESCO Global Geopark covers a large area of the Scottish Highlands, where mountains, lochs, coastlines, and rock formations reveal some of the oldest and most important geological landscapes in Europe. The geopark protects an internationally significant landscape shaped by billions of years of geological history and renowned for features such as the Moine Thrust.

Located within the wider landscapes of Wester Ross, Assynt, and Sutherland, the geopark forms part of a network of routes, landscapes, and places connected by mountain roads, walking routes, and coastal settlements. The North West Highlands UNESCO Global Geopark links ancient geology, Highland scenery, and protected landscapes across one of Scotland's most distinctive regions.
