Hotel Pachico is located in Laguardia, a historic hilltop town surrounded by the vineyards of Rioja Alavesa in the Basque Country. Its position within the medieval town provides a base for exploring Laguardia on foot before heading into the vineyards and countryside that extend towards the Sierra de Cantabria.
Walking from Laguardia opens up a landscape shaped by vineyards, wineries, small settlements and the mountains rising immediately to the north. Local routes provide opportunities to explore the wine-growing countryside at a slower pace, while the historic streets, walls and underground wine cellars give plenty of reason to spend time within Laguardia itself.
The GR® 38 Wine & Fish Route passes directly through Laguardia, following an old trading route that historically connected the wine-producing landscapes of Álava with the Basque coast. Sections of the trail can form part of a shorter walking stay, as well as providing a long-distance route north through the Basque Country.
South of Laguardia, the GR® 38 crosses the vineyards towards Oyón-Oion. Heading north, it climbs towards the Sierra de Cantabria before descending towards Lagrán, providing a marked contrast between the open vineyard landscapes of Rioja Alavesa and the mountain country beyond.
