Hemsby, Norfolk – Sandy Beach and Seafront on the Norfolk Coast Path

Wide sand, low dunes, and open shoreline between Winterton-on-Sea and Great Yarmouth

Hemsby sits directly on the Norfolk Coast Path along the east Norfolk coast between Winterton-on-Sea and Great Yarmouth. The trail follows the sandy shoreline with low dunes to the north and sea defences and coastal paths through the village, linking the quieter reserve landscapes to the north with the more developed coast toward Caister and Yarmouth.

The village stands on flat coastal ground behind low dunes and flood defences. Underfoot, progress is mostly level, alternating between compacted paths, sandy sections, minor roads, and short links through the settlement. The beach is wide and gently sloping, with uninterrupted views across the North Sea.

Hemsby has a stronger seaside character than the smaller villages to the north, with holiday parks, cafés, arcades, and seasonal facilities close to the shore. Despite this, long stretches of open sand and sky remain, especially toward Winterton, where the landscape quickly returns to dunes and open ground.

From the village, the Norfolk Coast Path heads north toward Winterton-on-Sea, passing back into dune systems and nature reserve landscapes, or south toward Caister-on-Sea and Great Yarmouth, where the coastline becomes more urban and built-up. The terrain remains flat and straightforward in both directions, creating an easy and continuous stretch of coast.
