Exploring Northamptonshire

Northamptonshire lies in The Midlands, bordered by Leicestershire and Rutland to the north, Cambridgeshire to the east, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire to the south, and Oxfordshire and Warwickshire to the west. Its landscapes are characterised by rolling farmland, limestone villages, wooded estates, river valleys and historic market towns, with an extensive network of public footpaths connecting the countryside.

The River Nene is one of the county's defining landscape features, flowing eastwards through Northampton, Wellingborough, Thrapston and Oundle towards the Cambridgeshire border. Its valley includes riverside meadows, lakes, wetlands and former gravel workings, many of which are now nature reserves and country parks. The Nene Valley provides opportunities for walking beside the river, exploring wetland habitats and visiting historic settlements along its course.

To the north and west, the countryside around Daventry, Towcester and the villages of the Northamptonshire uplands includes rolling hills, farmland, woodland and quiet rural lanes. The Jurassic limestone landscapes around Northamptonshire's northern villages are reflected in traditional stone buildings, historic churches and the surrounding agricultural countryside. Woodland and parkland around estates such as Fawsley and Castle Ashby provide further opportunities for local walks.

Long-distance walking routes connect Northamptonshire with neighbouring counties. The Nene Way follows much of the River Nene through the county, linking riverside towns, villages and open countryside. The Jurassic Way crosses northern Northamptonshire through limestone landscapes and historic settlements, while the Macmillan Way and other regional routes connect the county with the wider countryside of central and eastern England.

Historic market towns and villages provide starting points for exploring on foot. Northampton has riverside paths, parks and historic streets, while Oundle, Towcester, Brackley and Daventry offer access to local footpaths and surrounding countryside. Smaller settlements, including villages along the Nene Valley and in the north of the county, provide quieter bases for walking and exploring.

Nature reserves, country parks and former railway corridors add to Northamptonshire's walking network. The lakes and wetlands around Stanwick Lakes and the Nene Valley offer accessible waterside routes, while Salcey Forest, Brixworth Country Park and the Brampton Valley Way provide opportunities for woodland walks, cycling and longer journeys through the countryside.

From the River Nene and its wetland landscapes to the wooded estates, limestone villages and rolling farmland of the county's uplands, Northamptonshire can be explored through local walks, riverside paths and longer routes, with accommodation in market towns, villages and countryside locations across the county.
