Stay on the GR5 in Mercantour
Refuge de Longon is a mountain refuge and alpine farm at 1,880 metres above the Tinée Valley, within Mercantour National Park. Reached only on foot, the refuge sits among high pastures and mountain landscapes above the village of Roure.
The GR5 passes directly by the refuge as it crosses this part of the southern French Alps. The route approaches through mountain paths, alpine pasture and exposed upland terrain, making Refuge de Longon a natural overnight stop for walkers travelling through the Mercantour.
Longon is also part of a working pastoral landscape. The family running the refuge raises cattle, goats and sheep between the village of Roure and the high summer pastures, producing cheeses and other dairy products from their herds. Staying here therefore provides a connection with the traditional agricultural life of the mountains as well as a place to stop along the trail.
Beyond the refuge, the GR5 continues through the high landscapes of Mercantour National Park, linking remote valleys, mountain passes and pastoral settlements as it makes its way through the southern Alps. For walkers staying at Longon, the journey to and from the refuge is itself part of exploring this protected mountain landscape.
