A medieval castle in the Norfolk countryside
Caister Castle stands at West Caister, inland from Caister-on-Sea and close to Great Yarmouth on the eastern Norfolk Coast. Built during the 15th century for Sir John Fastolf, the castle is one of England's earliest substantial brick-built fortified residences. Its surviving tower, medieval walls and surrounding moat offer an insight into the architecture and history of medieval Norfolk.
Construction began in 1433, following the castle's commissioning in 1432, and continued into the 1440s. Sir John Fastolf was a prominent soldier and landowner who served during the Hundred Years' War. The castle combined defensive features, including fortified walls, towers and a moat, with the accommodation and comforts expected of a wealthy medieval household.
The castle later became associated with the Paston family, whose surviving correspondence provides an important record of life in 15th-century England. In 1469, Caister Castle was besieged by forces acting for the Duke of Norfolk during a dispute over its ownership. The siege became one of the best-known episodes in the castle's history.
Today, substantial sections of the brick walls and the approximately 90-foot tower remain standing. Visitors can explore the historic ruins and, when the attraction is open and access is permitted, climb the tower for views across the surrounding Norfolk countryside. The castle is protected as a Grade I listed building and Scheduled Monument, reflecting its architectural and historical importance.
The grounds also contain the Caister Castle Car Collection, a museum displaying historic cars, motorcycles and other vehicles. The collection adds another attraction to the site, making it possible to combine a visit to the medieval castle with an exploration of transport history.
