Ullíbarri-Gamboa Reservoir, Álava – Open Water Landscapes on the GR® 38 Route
Shoreline paths, wetlands, and wide horizons north of Vitoria-Gasteiz
The Ullíbarri-Gamboa Reservoir lies along the GR® 38 Wine & Fish Route north of Vitoria-Gasteiz, where the open plains of Álava transition into a landscape shaped by water, wetlands, and wooded shores. Created in the mid-20th century to supply water to the Basque Country, the reservoir now forms one of the most distinctive inland landscapes along the route.
The shoreline stretches across a broad basin bordered by pasture, woodland, and low hills. Open water reflects expansive skies, while inlets, reedbeds, and shallow margins provide habitat for birdlife and seasonal wetlands. The sense of space and light contrasts strongly with the enclosed valleys and agricultural plains crossed earlier in the journey.
Walking around the reservoir, the GR® 38 follows quiet rural roads, shoreline tracks, and gentle countryside paths. Terrain remains largely undulating rather than steep, allowing steady progress while offering wide views across the water and surrounding hills.
The reservoir area provides opportunities for rest and quiet observation of the landscape. Nearby villages such as Legutio and Ullíbarri-Gamboa offer accommodation, food, and services useful for walkers before the route begins its climb toward the Basque mountain ranges.
Beyond the reservoir, the GR® 38 continues north toward Otxandio, where the terrain becomes steeper and greener on the approach to the mountain landscapes of Bizkaia.
