Bermeo marks the northern end of the GR® 38 Wine & Fish Route on the Bay of Biscay, where the inland journey from Rioja Alavesa concludes at a historic fishing port shaped by maritime tradition and Atlantic weather. Arriving from Mundaka, the route follows coastal paths and shoreline terrain before entering the harbour and waterfront streets of one of the Basque Country’s most important seafaring towns.

The town is arranged around a working port lined with colourful buildings, fishing vessels, and quaysides that reflect centuries of maritime activity. Beyond the harbour, rugged cliffs and open sea views define the surrounding coastline, while nearby headlands frame the entrance to the Urdaibai estuary.

Approaching Bermeo, the GR® 38 transitions from estuary shoreline to coastal terrain, with expansive sea views replacing inland landscapes. The arrival at the harbour creates a clear sense of completion, where inland agricultural routes historically connected with coastal fishing and trade.

Bermeo offers extensive accommodation, restaurants, shops, and transport connections, making it an ideal place to rest, explore the coast, or continue travel along the Basque shoreline. Its maritime heritage, working harbour, and Atlantic setting provide a distinctive and memorable end point to the route.

Beyond the town, coastal paths continue toward dramatic headlands and protected coastal landscapes, including the cliffs and hermitage of San Juan de Gaztelugatxe.
