Stay in the heart of Bury St Edmunds
The Angel Hotel stands on Angel Hill in the historic centre of Bury St Edmunds, directly opposite the Abbey Gate. Its central position makes it a particularly good base for exploring the town on foot, with the Abbey Gardens, medieval abbey ruins and many of Bury St Edmunds' historic streets and buildings immediately nearby.
Cross Angel Hill from the hotel and the Abbey Gate leads into the Abbey Gardens, which contain the ruins of the medieval Abbey of St Edmund. once one of the most important medieval monasteries in England. Paths through the gardens and abbey precinct provide an easy starting point for exploring the town, with St Edmundsbury Cathedral, St Mary's Church and the historic centre all within walking distance.
There is plenty to discover beyond the immediate abbey area. Walks can follow the River Lark and paths through the town's parks and green spaces, or continue into the surrounding Suffolk countryside. The compact centre also makes it easy to combine walking with Bury St Edmunds' markets, independent shops, cafés, pubs and historic buildings.
The St Edmund Way passes through Bury St Edmunds and provides another way to explore the town and surrounding landscape on foot. Individual sections can be incorporated into a shorter stay, while those following the complete route can use Bury St Edmunds as an overnight stop.
The Angel itself forms part of the historic character of Angel Hill. Staying here places the town rather than the car at the centre of a visit, making it possible to step outside the hotel and explore much of Bury St Edmunds on foot.
