Southwold, Suffolk – Seaside Town on the Suffolk Coast Path
Promenade Paths, Shingle Beach, and Open North Sea Views
Southwold is a small seaside town on the Suffolk coast along the Suffolk Coast Path, set within the Suffolk Coast and Heaths National Landscape between Walberswick and Covehithe. Here the route follows promenade sections, dunes, and shoreline paths, where open beach and marsh landscapes meet a compact town beside the sea.
The town is arranged along the shoreline around its pier, common, and harbour entrance, with streets set back behind the promenade. Footpaths connect the seafront with the River Blyth and nearby marshland, allowing walking to continue easily between beach, estuary, and town centre.
Southwold offers useful services for walkers. There are shops, cafés, pubs, places to eat and drink, and accommodation across the town, making it a practical place to stop, resupply, or stay overnight on this section of the coast. Bus links connect Southwold with Halesworth and other Suffolk towns.
Beyond Southwold, the Suffolk Coast Path continues south toward Walberswick and Dunwich across heath and marsh, or north toward Covehithe and Lowestoft along open shoreline and cliff sections. The terrain remains mostly level, with firm coastal paths and long views across the North Sea.
