Gorleston-on-Sea, Norfolk – Cliffs and Sandy Beach on the Norfolk Coast Path
Wide sands, grassy cliffs, and open sea views south of Great Yarmouth
Gorleston-on-Sea sits directly on the Norfolk Coast Path on the south side of Great Yarmouth Harbour, where the River Yare reaches the North Sea. The trail follows the promenade and clifftop paths above a broad sandy beach, linking the busy frontage of Yarmouth with quieter residential stretches further south.
The town stands on slightly higher ground than the flat coast to the north, with low grassy cliffs backing the beach. Underfoot, progress is firm and level, using paved promenade, surfaced paths, and short roadside sections. Steps and ramps connect the clifftop with the sand below. The beach is wide and gently sloping, with uninterrupted views along the shoreline.
Gorleston has a settled seaside character, with cafés, gardens, and local services near the front rather than amusement arcades or resort attractions. Compared with Great Yarmouth, the atmosphere is quieter and more residential, with open lawns and green spaces overlooking the sea.
From the seafront, the Norfolk Coast Path heads north toward Great Yarmouth, crossing the harbour area before continuing along the promenade, or south toward Hopton-on-Sea and Lowestoft, following cliff-edge and coastal paths above the beach. The terrain remains mostly flat with gentle gradients, creating an easy and continuous stretch of coast.
